SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direct supervision of the San Antonio Botanical Garden Youth and Family Programs Specialist, the Camp Counselor will offer educational programs and experiences that communicate the importance of plants and nature. This person will work collaboratively with other staff and volunteers to facilitate summer programming. Duties include, but are not limited to interacting with campers, assisting with youth and family programs, facilitating activities for camp programs, gathering, and preparing materials for programs, and supporting related educational programs.

SPECIFIC DUTIES
  • Under guided supervision, assist with the development and implementation of educational lessons for youth camps and classes.
  • Lead formal and informal educational activities including hands-on activities and games for campers.
  • Help greet, direct, and supervise campers.
  • Follow all camp polies, rules and regulations to ensure camper safety and well-being at the garden.
  • Complete written reports such as accident, incident on a timely basis.
  • Communicate to supervisor promptly if there are problems or issues needing special attention.
  • Assist with preparing and sorting materials for exhibits, activities, events, etc.
  • Assist with set up and break down of events, programs, classes; provide support for special events.
  • Help to maintain educational supplies, storage areas and classrooms.
  • Work collaboratively on the Programs team to develop goals, objectives, and planning for educational programs.
  • All other duties as assigned.

SCHEDULE
This is a seasonal position. Schedule includes mandatory camp training and 6 weeks during the summer with a break the first week of July. Typical working hours are between 8 am- 5pm Monday through Friday but exact times may vary based on the camp.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education: High School Diploma required. Bachelor’s Degree or be in the process of obtaining a degree in, environmental education, early childhood or elementary education, horticulture, natural sciences, nutrition, or other subjects that align with education in an outdoor setting.
  • 18 years of age or older by the beginning of the first camp session.
  • Minimum 1-year previous experience working with children. Previous camp experience in a garden-based or similar informal education learning environment is preferred.
  • A strong desire to work with children between ages 5-17. The successful candidate will be skilled in their ability to manage groups of children while maintaining a positive environment.
  • Ability to work with diverse visitors, staff, and volunteers of all ages is necessary while representing the Garden in a thoughtful, friendly, and positive manner with professionalism and competence.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential for success in this position.
  • Basic organizational skills are required.
  • A passion for plants and the outdoors with an understanding and appreciation of the mission of the Garden is crucial.
  • Flexibility to work a rotating schedule including some weekends and holidays is required.
  • Desired, but not necessary, is fluency in Spanish.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 30 lbs and to bend and reach shelving. Ability and willingness to work out-of-doors in varying weather conditions.
  • Position requires the ability to remain positive and engaging in a varying outdoor environment with various weather conditions.
  • Work is primarily performed outside at the Botanical Garden.
  • Flexible and able to handle unexpected situations.
  • First aid, food handlers and CPR certifications (or ability to become certified)

Compensation: Compensation will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the individual.
