SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direct supervision of a Program Manager, the Culinary Lead Educator will offer culinary focused educational programs and experiences that communicate the importance of plants and nature. Using best practices and audience feedback they will help design and provide relevant, engaging, and high-quality programming to deepen guests’ connections with edible plants, cooking, and overall wellness. The Culinary Lead Educator is responsible for leading and assisting with the daily operations of the culinary programs in collaboration with Adult, Family, Youth, and School Learning and Community Access teams. This person will work collaboratively with other culinary educators, contractors, and volunteers to facilitate current programming and develop materials for culinary programs.

SPECIFIC DUTIES
  • Assist with developing and implementing culinary experiences in the Garden, including classes, school visits, culinary garden tours, demonstrations, and tastings.
  • Maintain, and implement safety and sanitation standards in the kitchen areas based on best practices/ServSafe standards.
  • Assist with organization and inventory of equipment and supplies in the kitchen. Responsible for communicating needs for products and supplies for programming.
  • Works closely with the Adult, Family, Youth, and School Learning and Community Access teams to support department culinary programming needs.
  • Lead formal and informal culinary based educational programs for diverse audiences. Garden culinary programs serve adult, school, youth, family, intergenerational, and community access audiences.
  • Work collaboratively on the Programs team to develop goals, objectives, and planning for educational programs, as well as hands-on activities for events and other large programs.
  • Assist with preparing and sorting materials for classes, tastings, activities, events, etc.
  • Assist with set up and break down of events, programs, classes; provide support for program events; washing dishes.
  • Work with fellow employees and culinary docents and other volunteers interested in the culinary garden and teaching kitchen.
  • Any other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s Degree is preferred in one of the following areas: Culinary Arts, Culinary Nutrition, Food Service Management, Education, or closely related field required, or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong culinary skills are preferred.
  • A Minimum of 1-year experience conducting culinary, nutrition-based, or nature-based educational programs.
  • Current ServSafe Food Handlers and TABC Certification or ability to obtain upon employment.
  • Must have flexible working hours; some morning, evening and weekend work is required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • In-depth knowledge of food and kitchen safety.
  • A strong work ethic, ability to maintain and model professional standards.
  • Ability to work with diverse guests, staff, and volunteers is necessary while representing the Garden in a thoughtful, friendly, and positive manner with professionalism and competence.
  • Ability to remain positive and engaging in an outdoor teacher kitchen environment with various weather conditions and temperatures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A passion for nutrition, food, and plants with an understanding and appreciation of the mission of the Garden is crucial.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Compensation: Compensation will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the individual.
